Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses has been unveiled in Rome after undergoing yet another renaissance.
Restorers revealed a freshened up statue of Moses sculpted by the famous Italian artist for the tomb of Pope Julius II at the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. The unparalleled polymath had paid extreme attention to make sure the statue was anatomically correct.
In addition, lighting had always been a crucial element for the masterpiece as the marble acquires a different aspect under different reflections. But the passing of time had changed these conditions, calling for a precise dusting.
On top of the three-year-long cleanup, a new lighting system was devised to replace sunlight. This recreates the artist’s originally intended light patterns while avoiding possible harm from natural light.
